Is IISA Returning as a New Organization?

The International Inline Skating Association (IISA) shut down in December of 2004, but now former members of that group are proposing to create a new "no dues, no overhead" organization of industry insiders who meet once a year to discuss issues related to the North American inline skating industry.

Allan Wright of Zephyr Adventures is organizing a meeting of inline skating industry insiders which will take place on November 16, 2005, the Friday before the Northshore Inline Marathon in Minnesota.

The purpose of the meeting is to propose creating a new organization called "For Skating" that would be a no-overhead, free organization to facilitate communication between those involved in the recreational and fitness inline skating industry in North America.

The Web site for the new organization will be the former IISA Web site at IISA.org, which was taken over by Allan Wright when IISA folded in December of 2004.

FROM THE MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT: "The proposed For Skating organization would have no legal structure and would exist only on the Inline Skating Resource Center website at IISA.org, via email, and at an annual gathering. However, everything is open for discussion. The name and exact structure of the organization will result from the comments of those who attend the September meeting."

The December 2004 shut-down of the IISA left several voids that needed to be filled. This resulted in several new organizations being formed:

    United Skate Schools Group (USSG)
USSG is a professional organization for skating educators formed in early 2005 by a group of IISA-certified instructors. The organization provides skating instructor certification, insurance, and annual professional development meetings. Their Board of Advisors includes the director of the former IISA's ICP program.

    USA Inline Fit
USA Fit was designated by the former IISA to take over providing insurance to inline skating instructors. USA Fit named the skating branch of their organization "USA Inline Fit". In addition to providing insurance, their Web site includes a directory of USA Inline Fit members.

    National Skate Patrol (NSP)
This is not a new organization, but it is newly independent. The National Skate Patrol was originally created by the IISA in 1992. When IISA shut down in 2004, the National Skate Patrol became an independent organization headed by Rick Short of Philadelphia.
